Born in Utah in the late 1940's, R. Geoffrey Blackburn has been drawing and painting since he was a child. Although he studied art both privately and at the University of Utah, he is mostly self-taught. He began his professional art career in 1970 and has created art, taught art and worked in various art-related fields his entire professional life. While in England, in the early 1970's, he was the principle artist for an international magazine.
In 1987, he invented and later patented a new, user-interactive art form.
His passion for painting Southwest red rock landscapes was born of his involvement in the uranium boom of the 1970’s. During that time, he co-owned and operated a mining and exploration company, North American Resources Corp. operating out of Moab, Utah. He, staked claims, drilled, prospected and promoted uranium properties all over the Colorado Plateau. Living and working in the high desert, he began doing photo studies and sketches of the myriad mind-blowing scenes and turning some of these into paintings. The mining company is long gone, but he still paints the red rock.
